1870 Rome, a young italian, Orlando, alleged son of a monsignor and one prostitute, raises friendship with a Piedmontese soldier, Carlo Alberto, who claims to be the son of King Vittorio Emanuele II and a peasant. Friendship between the two young men threatens to crash when Orlando discovers her sister Chiara in the company of Carlo Alberto. Subsequently, as Carlo Alberto took part in the battle for the conquest of Rome, with no news, Orlando and Chiara unnecessarily seek it by believing him dead: in fact, the Piedmontese soldier is in prison for an infringement of military regulation.
