The Dakota NY 9, December 1980

John Lennon was tragically gunned down outside The Dakota in New York City on December 8, 1980. ABC began the network's late-night news program with the news that the Beatles star had been shot three times. It's still a moment that echoes in history. Ringo and Barbara were dating and spending a holiday together when the news broke about the murder of John Lennon. The couple flew to New York to comfort John’s widow, Yoko, and the Lennon’s son Sean on December 9, 1980.

Ringo was mobbed by screaming fans as he arrived at the Dakota. Hundreds of Lennon fans -- many of them weeping -- paid tribute from behind crowded barricades outside his apartment. Ringo & Barbara were filmed as they left the Dakota through a thrown of fans.
