AmfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, (AMerican Foundation for Aids Research) is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education, and the advocacy of AIDS-related public policy.

AmfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala is a charitable fundraiser held each year during the Cannes Film Festival. May 21, 1998, at this amfAR fundraising event during the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, Sharon Stone boosted the bids for a performance by Elton John and Ringo Starr - of the rock and roll classic, "Great Balls of Fire" - by offering to dance onstage as they played. The charity auction raised more than $1.2m (£740,000), and made the news worldwide.
